Athlete Supplementation: The Science, Safety and Regulations

There are 10,000's of dietary supplements available, many with grandiose promises, leaving many athletes and coaches uncertain. Adding to this uncertainty and confusion, athletes and coaches have strict guidelines to follow around dietary supplements. To help navigate this world of dietary supplements for collegiate athletes, Registered Dietitians, Dr. Chris Mohr and Dana Angelo White, who is also a certified athletic trainer, will discuss research and evidence around some of the more popular dietary supplements, along with offering best practices for supplement administration as well as explore some of the most important regulations and FAQs for collegiate athletes and support staff.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand policies and regulations regarding dietary supplement use for NCAA athletes

2. Understand the role of the dietary supplement compliance coordinator within the collegiate sports medicine team.

3. Identify and discuss existing scientific literature around popular dietary supplements

Dana Angelo White, MS, RD, ATC is a registered dietitian, certified athletic trainer, cookbook author, journalist, and nutrition and fitness consultant. Dana is the sports dietitian and associate clinical professor of Athletic Training and Sports Medicine at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. She has been practicing as a certified athletic trainer for 20 years and as a dual credentialed dietitian and ATC for nearly fifteen. She is a member of the USOC Sports Dietitian Registry and National Athletic Trainers’ Association liaison to the Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness nutrition subgroup of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Dana is the nutrition expert for FoodNetwork.com and has served on advisory boards for Verywell, Greatist, Applegate, Chobani and has worked as a media spokesperson for Gatorade, the National Honey Board, National Mango Board and Cooking Light Magazine. She has made appearances on Good Day Street Talk, Food Network.com, Access Hollywood, ABC Nightly News, NBC Connecticut, GMA Health, New York Live and Better Connecticut. Dana’s work has been featured on Food Network.com, Verywell.com, Cooking Light.com, Today’s Dietitian, SHAPE, SEVENTEEN, Prevention, Muscle & Fitness, Men’s Fitness, and Maxim.

Dana earned her master’s degree in nutrition education from Teachers’ College-Columbia University and bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine from Quinnipiac. You will often find her HIIT training or out on her paddleboard; she resides in Connecticut with her husband, 3 daughters and Boston Terrier “Violet Pickles.”
