Eric Fears

Eric Fears was named to his current position at the University of Georgia after five years as director of strength and conditioning for the Bulldog Football Program. He currently oversees strength training activities that pertain to all coliseum-based sports, with a particular emphasis on men’s basketball and women’s gymnastics.

Fears was named director of strength and conditioning for all sports at the University of Georgia in January of 1996 after serving in the same capacity at his alma mater, the University of Virginia, for the previous two years. He was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Strength Coach of the Year in 1995.

Before his two years at Virginia, Fears served as director of strength and conditioning at Washington State (1993), South Carolina (1988-92), and The Citadel (1997-98). He also held graduate assistant (1994-95) and assistant strength coach (1995-97) positions at Virginia. Fears has coached over 60 athletes who played in the National Football league and 12 athletes who played in the National Basketball Association.

A native of Silver Spring, Maryland, Fears lettered three years as a running back at Virginia, where he was a member of the Cavaliers’ first winning football team under head coach George Welsh in 1993. In 1981, he was voted the team’s best blocker and best runner. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Virginia in Arts and Sciences in 1994.

Fears and his wife, Sherri Gibson, have two sons, Eric Jr. (8) and Naaman (3).
