Dwight Galt

Coach Dwight Galt, the Director of Strength & Conditioning at the University of Maryland, is entering his 18th year with the Terrapins and his 12th year as Director.  He began his career at Maryland in January 1984, working as an unpaid intern for then Head Strength Coach, Frank Costello.  He assisted in the preparation of ACC Championship football teams in 1984 and 1985 and was also the Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Men's Basketball program, which featured a young phenomenon, named Len Bias.

At the conclusion of the 1985 summer preparation period, Coach Galt took a leave of absence from his duties with the strength staff to attend graduate school at the University of Maryland.  In May 1989, he received his Master's of Science degree in Exercise Physiology to supplement the Bachelor's of Science in Business & Management he received from the University of Maryland back in 1981.  Coach Galt was hired as a full-time assistant strength coach at Maryland one month following his Master's graduation and began a 5 year stint training the 500+ athletes that were participating in intercollegiate athletics at the time.

In December 1993, Coach Galt was named the Head Strength Coach at Maryland and became responsible for the physical preparation of the University’s 28 intercollegiate sports that involved nearly 720 athletes.  His primary responsibility during the past 12 years has been the athletic preparation of the football program, but he was also responsible for the Men's Basketball program from 1989 to 2000.

Throughout his career at Maryland, Coach Galt has been extremely fortunate to work with some great strength coaches including Evan Marcus, the head strength coach at the University of Virginia; Craig Fitzgerald, the head strength coach at Harvard University; Mike Gerber, former head strength coach at Syracuse University; and Kurtis Schutlz, the head strength coach with the Minnesota Vikings.  In addition, his assistants Corliss White and Barry Kagan are entering their 10th years as strength coaches at Maryland and have been invaluable in advancing the Terp’s strength program in a positive direction.

Dwight has been married to Janice Taylor Galt for 26 years, and they have 4 children.  Angie, his oldest at 22 years old, will be entering Maryland's nursing school this fall after serving as the starting catcher for the Brown University softball program for 2 seasons. Twenty year old Teri, will be beginning her fourth year as a starting defender for the Frostburg State University soccer program in the fall and has earned all-conference honors the past two seasons.  Dwight and Jan's 18 year old twin sons, Dwight IV and Tommy, are currently completing their senior season at Good Counsel High School where they have participated in football and basketball.  During the recently completed 2004 football season, they led the Falcons to a record of 11-1 and were named Consensus All State in the state of Maryland.  This fall, the twins will join their father at the University of Maryland where they have signed National Letters of Intent to play football for the Terrapins.
