Tim Swanger
One of the most accomplished and respected strength and conditioning coaches in Conference USA, Tim Swanger is starting his fifth year as the head strength and conditioning coach at the University of Cincinnati, as well as his 13th year in the strength and conditioning field at the collegiate level.
Swanger, 40, came to Cincinnati in 1998 after serving in the same capacity at Army for six years (1992-98). He is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive strength and conditioning program for more than 400 student-athletes in 18 sports at UC, providing the most up to date nutritional information and utilizing the latest equipment.
A native of Shelby, Ohio, Swanger graduated from Muskingum College in 1989. He was a four-year starter in football, earning All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors three times. As a senior in 1985, he received Division III All-America honors and received the league’s Critchfield Award as the top defensive player in the conference.
The 1985 recipient of the W.G. Moore Award as the top senior student-athlete at Muskingum, Swanger was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame in 1997.
After graduating from Muskingum with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Education and Health Education in 1989, Tim became a teacher, as well as an assistant football coach within the Ashland school system for the 1989-90 school year.
Coach Swanger moved to the collegiate ranks in March of 1990 as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Army. Two years later, he was promoted to head strength and conditioning coach—a position he held until leaving for Cincinnati in 1998.
In addition to his duties working with the UC student-athletes, Swanger teaches a course in advanced physical conditioning for the UC School of Physical Education and is working towards earning a Masters Degree in Health and Exercise Management.
Swanger and his wife, Karyn, have two sons, Austin (8) and Connor (5).
