Biography:
Al Vermeil was a natural football player was named Northern Cal. First team his senior year. He also excelled in baseball, track and field. He was All League Catcher and holds the school shot put record 54' 9'. He then played for his brother, Dick, at Napa Valley College, then as an all-star linebacker with Utah State. Al started 30 straight games, a school record at the time before freshmen were eligible. Al is in both Calistoga and Napa College Sports Hall Of Fame and was Honorable Mention All American both in high school and at Napa College. Upon earning a master's degree in physical education at Kansas State University, he became an assistant coach at Casa Roble High School in Orangevale Ca. Al came to Moreau Catholic High School in 1973 with a mission.

In six seasons at Moreau, Al Vermeil and his team had CAL league 82% winning percentage, leading the Mariners to nine football championships, including three at the varsity level. He earned 1975 Catholic Athletic League Coach of the Year Award. He was inducted into the Moreau Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007 and then the 1975 CAL Championship team was inducted in 2012. Some of his former players have followed in his footsteps and have become successful coaches in their own right. His accomplishments only grew from there. For his success at Moreau, Moreau is naming their new athlete facility, Al Vermeil Field.

Al is the only person to hold a head strength coach position with teams in the National Football League, National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball. Al is the only strength coach to have World Championship Rings from both the NFL and NBA. He was an inaugural inductee into the National Strength and Conditioning Association Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003 and Legends in the Field by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association in 2007. In July 2012 Al received the Boyd Epley Life Time Achievement Award from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Through his longtime friendship and association with Legendary PGA Instructor Chuck Cook, together they developed golf strength and conditioning programs for amateurs and PGA professionals. Al has been part of the Titleist Performance Intrude advisory board and a feature speaker at TPI seminars.
