Gatorade Pre-Con: Nutrition for High Intensity

Biography:
In February 2007 Jana Heitmeyer was named the Director of Sports Nutrition for the University of Missouri after serving the previous three years as an Assistant Director and Graduate Assistant. In this role she is responsible for nutrition education, body composition analysis, and diet analysis for all Missouri student-athletes. Originally from northwest Ohio, Heitmeyer graduated from Kent State University where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in zoology and pre-medicine. In May 2006, she received her Master's of Education in Health Education and Promotion from the University of Missouri. She received her degree in Dietetics in May 2011. As a member of the Kent State University gymnastics team, she was a four-year letter winner and captain during her career with the Golden Flashes. While at Kent State, she served as an intern in the strength and conditioning department for a year and a half assisting with the volleyball, soccer, women’s basketball, gymnastics, and golf programs. Heitmeyer is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. She is also a Registered and Licensed Dietitian and a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Presentation Summary:
This presentation will talk about the diet for high intensity sports and its impact on the athlete’s success. While training lasts for hours, the actual event can be over in a matter of seconds to minutes. We will cover energy systems used, nutrition guidelines and recommendations as well as supplementation for very high intensity sports, high intensity short duration sports and intermittent, high intensity sports.
