Recovery & Regeneration: Promoting Recovery for Enhanced Performance

The study of recovery and regeneration began in the 1980’s, yet there continues to be a misunderstanding surrounding the technicalities and nuances of the matter. Furthermore, ambiguity prevails around recovery modalities and their associated prescription. From rock mats to breathing to cold plunges, understanding regeneration techniques, their purpose, and their application, will provide a better return of investment to the programming you provide for those you train.

Dr. Brandon Marcello has over 25-years experience in the performance enhancement industry. As the Chief Innovation Officer and Partner in JAG Consulting, he takes forward-thinking organizations and elite athletes to the next level of their game - and careers. Having extensive involvement in both the applied and research worlds, he has implemented successful, high performance training programs for professional, Olympic and collegiate athletes.

Dr. Marcello has recently been tasked by the U.S. Department of Defense and Nevada National Security Site to be the lead human performance advisory for the MASTER-E (The Measuring and Advancing Solider Tactical Readiness and Effectiveness) project. This is a 5-year program of multi-service interest and funded in part by the Secretary of Defense Close Combat Lethality Task Force. The program is a science and technology effort that will address a critical gap to better quantify human performance trait/state, and how it relates to improving operational outcomes.

Prior to his work with JAG and the DoD, Brandon served as the Director of Sports Performance at Stanford University. Marcello’s role was to oversee all aspects of athletic performance enhancement for the 36 intercollegiate sports. During his seven years at Stanford, Marcello initiated cross-department collaboration with many of Stanford’s academic departments, including, but not limited to the Stanford sleep center, center for longevity, bio-engineering, residential and dining enterprises, Stanford surgery, neuroscience, and the Hoover Institute. He was the creator the highly-acclaimed Performance Based Dining concept that has been successfully implemented since 2011, and has received national media attention and numerous awards.

Prior to his seven years at Stanford, he served as the Director of Performance for USA Softball, and implemented all athletic development programs for the 2008 Silver Medal US Olympic Softball team, 2007 Gold Medal Pan American team and 2006 Gold Medal World Championship team.

In 1999 he was approached by Mark Verstegen to join him in Tempe, Ariz. to help create EXOS (formerly Athletes' Performance (AP)), a world class training facility for professional and elite athlete.

Prior to his work at the Arizona facility, Marcello was a Performance Specialist at the International Performance Institute (IPI) of the IMG Academies in Bradenton, FL.

A recognized author, researcher and international presenter, he routinely speaks around the world on a number of topics pertaining to elite-level training and performance.

Marcello holds a PhD in Sports Nutrition from Baylor University, and an MS and BS in Exercise Science from Marshall University.
