Join the Jackrabbits! South Dakota State University is looking for an enthusiastic and team-oriented Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach to help student-athletes reach their full potential. This role supports the development and delivery of training programs designed to enhance performance, prevent injury, and prepare student-athletes for success in their sport. The position will work closely with football and provide oversight for additional sports as assigned. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.
SDSU is an NCAA Division I institution and competes in The Summit League for all sports except football (Missouri Valley Football Conference), wrestling (Big XII Conference), and women’s equestrian (National Collegiate Equestrian Association).
Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Implement training programs
Set up equipment, supervise workouts, and provide instruction on proper lifting techniques to ensure safety and effectiveness. Motivate and guide student-athletes while reinforcing discipline and accountability.
Design sport-specific strength and conditioning programs
Create training plans tailored to individual sports, using knowledge of sport demands, current best practices, and effective programming techniques to enhance performance and reduce injury risk.
Coordinate administrative tasks
Collaborate with coaches and staff to establish program goals. Meet with student-athletes, develop team training schedules, manage equipment needs and purchases, and maintain accurate performance testing data. Respond to phone calls and emails in a timely manner.
Supervise and mentor graduate assistants and interns
Provide clear expectations, regular feedback, and guidance on program design and instructional technique. Monitor performance, document progress, and assist in assigning responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science or related field completed by date of application;
At least one year of experience of collegiate strength and conditioning experience;
Strength & conditioning coach certified (SCCC) by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association or Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength & Conditioning Association;
CPR certified;
Experience in program design;
Ability to work collaboratively with coaches, staff and student-athletes;
Experience supervising and directing student-athletes and other personnel;
Ability to work independently;
Commitment to promote an atmosphere of compliance and adherence to institutional, conference, and knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations;
Effective communication (oral, written and interpersonal) skills; and
Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science or Physical Education or related field;
USAW certification;
Division I intercollegiate experience;
Experience in all areas of strength training as well as speed, agility, plyometric, flexibility and cardiovascular training; and
Experience with the sport of softball, track and field, and football.
