Dr. Declan Connolly

Understanding Energy Systems in the Design of Athletic Training Programs

Dr. Declan Connolly is a Professor of Physical Education and Exercise Science at the University of Vermont where he is also Director of the Human Performance Laboratory. Dr. Connolly is a Nationally and Internationally recognized exercise physiologist having published over 300 articles in his interest area of sports performance, muscle adaptation and injury with training. He is currently writing two books, one on ?Basic and Applied Kinesiology? and the other on ?Heart Rate Training?. He is a past President of the New England American College of Sports Medicine He is Editor of Research Quarterly for Sports & Exercise, a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Dr. Declan Connolly is also an Assistant Editor for the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, an associate editor for JSCR and a member of the Executive Board of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. He has several regular sports science columns. He consults to numerous sports organizations including the National Hockey League, the National Football League, US Rowing, US Skiing and has served as a consultant to the international Olympic Committee on several occasions. In addition to his publications in scientific journals his work is widely quoted in the popular media including stories in the NY times, LA Times, London Times, Runner?s World, Prevention Magazine, health magazine, SELF and many others. His work appears on over 70000 websites and has been the subject of news stories on Fox, BBC, CBS, and numerous other TV and radio stations. He was integral in the research behind the startup sports drink company Cherrypharm. As an athlete, Declan was a 3 time national age group road cycling champion in Ireland, where he grew up.He has also played representative rugby and currently coaches the University of Vermont Men?s Rugby team. More recently he has turned his attention back to endurance sports and has completed multiple triathlons from sprint distance to ironman, and several ultra marathon swims. Declan lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Shannon and four children, Kiaran, Fiona, Cillian, and Nuala.
