MSCC Class of 2025

Adam Smotherman

Head Football Strength and Conditioning Coach

Adam Smotherman began his career in collegiate athletics as a defensive lineman for the Vanderbilt University football program from 2006-2010. Under the tutelage of MSCC John Sisk and his Strength & Conditioning staff, Smotherman was a four-year letterman and multi-year starter at defensive tackle earning the team’s Ironman Lineman Award three times, the Lifter of the Year Award two times, the Dedication Award, and was elected team co-captain his senior year.

Following his playing career, Smotherman served as an intern in the weight room at Vanderbilt under MSCC Dwight Galt and his staff in 2011. Smotherman graduated from Vanderbilt in May of 2011.
Next, Smotherman worked as a Graduate Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at Clemson University under MSCC Joey Batson and his staff of MSCC David Abernethy and MSCC Larry Greenlee. Smotherman earned a master’s degree from Clemson. After one year in this post, Smotherman worked as Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning at Furman University under Abernethy. One year later, Batson hired Smotherman to return to Clemson, where he served as an Assistant for nine years.
In December 2021, Head Football Coach Tony Elliott hired Smotherman to serve as Head Football Strength & Conditioning Coach at the University of Virginia, the post he currently holds.

Smotherman has had the opportunity to serve countless scholar-athletes, coaches, and staff members as part of the Strength & Conditioning profession. Additionally, Smotherman has been blessed to experience championships and to be part of successful cultures. While those mountaintop moments have been unbelievable, Smotherman’s greatest joy and purpose are in following his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; loving his wife, Lindsey; and getting to be Dad to two wonderful children, Jack & Caroline.

While we do not know what the future holds, we know Who holds the future; and Smotherman looks forward to being a tool in His hand to help create and shape the future of collegiate athletics and the strength & conditioning profession.
