MSCC Class of 2015

Christopher Stewart

Associate AD, Strength and Conditioning

Chris Stewart began coaching as a student assistant at Western Carolina University. While completing his Undergraduate Degree in Sports Management/Exercise Science, he was given the opportunity to assist Master Strength and Conditioning Coach Rob Phillips.

In January 1998, Stewart arrived at the University of Tennessee and was introduced to Legendary Strength Coach John Stucky, who promoted him to Graduate Assistant. This helped him earn his MS in Human Performance and Sports Studies and allowed him to work with great coaches and mentors: Chris Carlisle, Tommy Moffitt, Eric Ciano, Aaron Ausmus, Noel Durfey, Jason Elkin, Matt Jennings, and Dan Eason.

In 2001, he became a full-time assistant and was among the inaugural CSCCa certified class of Strength & Conditioning Coaches in Salt Lake City. He was promoted by Johnny Long to Associate Head Strength & Conditioning Coach in 2003 and was made the Director of the University's Strength & Conditioning Clinic, one of the largest and longest running university strength clinics. In all, Stewart spent 11 years at Tennessee and shared many accomplishments, including the first BCS National Title, 10 Bowl appearances, and 6 SEC Championships for Football and Track and Field. Stewart is most grateful for the knowledge and opportunities he was offered by the great coaches that paved the way and would like to specifically thank Johnny Long, Roderick Moore, Brian Van Vleet, Brian Gearity, Dan Hamilton, and Ryan Horton.

In 2009, Stewart was hired as the Director of Strength & Conditioning at the University of Richmond. Over the past 6 years, he has been impressed with the work ethic and passion of his athletes and staff. Since his arrival, the Spider Football Program has earned 2 Conference Championships and multiple playoff appearances. Stewart would like to thank his assistants Jeff Appel, Beacher Porter, Jay DeMayo, and Andrew White for their loyalty and commitment.

Finally, Coach Stewart would like to express his gratitude to his wife, Sherry, of 16 years, and their two children, Cole and Lily, for allowing him to become the husband, father, and coach he is today. He is honored to share this moment with so many great strength and conditioning professionals tonight.
